Research & Development

Ørsted R&D fosters a collaborative environment for projects that aim to shape the future of green energy through research and technology development.

To drive sustainable progress, we always welcome collaboration proposals within R&D and knowledge generation, as well as proposals seeking public funding. If you have an idea for a R&D project that you would like Ørsted to participate in, please submit your proposal in the form below!

The “Enabling interoperability of multi-vendor HVDC grids” (InterOPERA) project, funded by Horizon Europe unites 21 European partners to make future HVDC systems mutually compatible and interoperable by design, to improve the grid forming capabilities of offshore and onshore converters and pave the way for the first HVDC multi-terminal, multi-vendor, multi-purpose real-life projects in Europe.


A three-year project providing the basis for commercialization of sustainable recycling of wind turbine blades. The project’s vision is to establish functional, sustainable value chains to handle end of life wind turbine blades from decommissioning, to re-processing and recycling in new applications.


The project will establish the largest quantum computer in Denmark to explore the possibilities and limitations of the technology. Dispatch optimization in future energy systems will be tested as one of the modeling challenges that are currently limited by conventional computing capacities.

Open Innovation

Ørsted Open Innovation is a team focused on fostering collaboration with external innovation ecosystems around the globe.

We offer tailor-made support to accelerate innovation journeys, providing access to a global network of internal and external experts in green energy, diverse green energy assets (onshore wind, solar, storage, green fuel facilities, and the world’s largest fleet of offshore wind farms), extensive data resources, capital for co-financing and investment, and a track record of adopting cutting-edge innovations globally.

Open Innovation also operates Innovation Hubs in various locations including the US, UK, Ireland and The Netherlands, ) serving as open spaces for collaboration with innovators and strengthening local engagement with external innovation ecosystems.

Ørsted Propel

In 2023, Ørsted launched a four-month open innovation programme with Rockstart – a leading early stage VC-accelerator – to accelerate startups with the potential to revolutionize the energy sector as part of Ørsted’s new Innovation Hub in the Netherlands. Through this development, there’s potential to develop pilot projects, funding opportunities, and other long-term engagements with Ørsted.

Prosperity Partnership

The Prosperity Partnerships scheme is designed to support co-investments in strategic partnerships between businesses and key universities, leveraging shared research challenges and complementary capabilities. This initiative aims to foster excellent research with real-world impact, addressing national and international priorities.

Future Energy Storage Studio

The Future Energy Storage Studio will engage entrepreneurs, engineers, inventors, and corporate partners, beginning with Ørsted, to test and iterate innovative solutions to critical challenges across the renewable energy value chain.

Ørsted Ventures

Ørsted Ventures is an early stage, patient capital fund designed to help the next generation of climate entrepreneurs on their journey to advance a green energy future.

We want to partner with talented founders, entrepreneurs and digital disruptors to accelerate the discovery, adoption and rollout of solutions to the climate crisis, from flexibility solutions to offtake and industry enablement.

Crux Climate

Crux is an efficient finance ecosystem for the energy transition, catering to developers, tax credit buyers, and financial institutions. Their platform facilitates the transaction and management of transferable tax credits, offering tools to streamline transactions, simplify price discovery, and manage compliance. The company's network connects counterparties in the industry, reduces risk, and helps maximize the value of tax credits.


Amperon is a company that provides next-generation analytics for the energy transition, offering demand forecasts and data-driven insights to optimize energy market operations. Their innovative modeling approaches and precise forecasts help organizations make better-informed decisions, optimize their portfolios, and navigate extreme weather events. Amperon's technology has been praised for its ability to support supply and demand response assets, virtual power plants, and trading desks, contributing to a more sustainable and reliable energy future.


Spoor is a Norwegian ‘deeptech’ start-up which has built a specially designed artificial intelligence (AI) system to monitor and track birdlife at offshore windfarms. By working with Spoor, Ørsted will continue to improve its understanding of how birds behave while travelling in the vicinity ofits wind farms.
